Punto banco drawing rules

Why can nobody at a baccarat table decide to stand or draw? Because punto banco, the form played in almost every casino, scripts the whole hand in advance. Player draws a third card on a total of 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. Banker's third card depends on its own total and, when Player has drawn, on the value of Player's third card. The dealer consults no judgment and the bettor has no say.

That script is what makes the game calculable to several decimal places. In blackjack or Three Card Poker the edge quoted assumes a strategy; play worse than that strategy and the real cost goes up. Punto banco has no strategy layer on the main wagers. Pick Banker, Player or Tie, and the drawing table plus the payout schedule fix the expectation.

The asymmetry in the rules also explains the asymmetry in the odds. Banker acts last and reacts to Player's third card, which is why Banker wins more often (about 45.86% of eight-deck hands against 44.62% for Player) before any commission enters the picture. The two labels are not interchangeable wagers with different names; they are priced differently because they are dealt differently.

Staking patterns run into the same wall. Doubling after a loss changes how much is at risk, not which cards the hands draw. Switching from Player to Banker changes which wager is being priced, not the dealing process. A system that "beats" the shoe would have to alter a procedure no one at the table controls.

Variants that do allow decisions, such as chemin de fer, are a different calculation.
