What Actually Drives Software Development Costs
The dominant factor is never technology — it is almost always how to find right software development company much is still undecided. Every open question in the requirements is converted into a buffer somewhere in the quote. A vendor that cannot see the exceptions and edge cases has to assume a pessimistic case. Spending a week on a discovery phase often reduces the overall figure far more than negotiating the rate.
Integrations remain the next major multiplier. A feature that touches only your own data is low risk; the same feature connected to a legacy ERP is not. The unknown hides in the other system: poor documentation, slow approval cycles, inconsistent data. Ask any vendor to list every external system, because that is where the numbers slip.
Quality attributes can easily double the number. An application used by a small internal team costs far less than the same functionality handling public traffic. Compliance work, high availability, performance under load, data retention rules and localisation add weeks of work. Put them in the brief or you can expect the estimate to move later.
The team you are quoted matters a great deal. An hourly rate says almost nothing on its own: one senior developer at a higher rate can be cheaper overall than two juniors who require constant review. Also ask which roles are billed: project management, quality assurance, infrastructure work and design are real work, enterprise php development but they must be itemised.
The build price is not the full cost of ownership. Budget for hosting, paid APIs, logging and alerting and an ongoing support budget annually. A useful planning figure says that a live system needs a recurring percentage of its original build cost per year simply to stay current. Ignoring this is the classic mistake.
